Welcome to the Summer 2024 Issue of the Tzu Chi USA Journal. Our last two issues focused on Tzu Chi USA’s medical mission in celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2023. Issue 73 brings us a different centralized theme: preparedness.
“Preparedness by Design: Tzu Chi’s Evolving Disaster Relief Materials and Methods” begins with Taiwan’s swift and efficient disaster relief response to the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the nation on April 3, 2024. Tzu Chi participated in the aid effort, and our signature partition cubicles and furniture in emergency shelters appeared in international news coverage and caught the world’s attention. Not only has Taiwan learned from previous earthquakes and strengthened its disaster preparedness, but Tzu Chi is also continually improving its disaster relief response, as this article reveals.
