In this 79th issue of the Tzu Chi USA Journal, we follow people who do not stop at good intentions. Each story traces what happens after someone decides to stay with a commitment and see it through.

Our cover story, “From Goal to Reality: Tzu Chi Oakland’s iCare510 Program Is Thriving,” begins with that kind of decision. When the Tzu Chi USA Oakland Service Center team first heard about Tzu Chi’s mobile vision care, they recognized a need in their own community and chose to act. Through fundraising, training, equipment purchases, and school district approvals, they launched a new vision care initiative in Oakland, an effort undertaken with the dedicated support of the Tzu Chi Vision Mobile Clinic team in Fresno.

That same spirit of commitment sustains the work described in “Reaching a Milestone for Quality Care Rooted in Compassion.” Tzu Chi Medical Foundation’s health centers have passed rigorous federal review to maintain their Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike designation. This success reflects the diligence and care of staff serving uninsured and under-resourced patients, steadfastness measured not only in accreditation scores but in who they refuse to leave behind.

Tzu Chi’s concern for well-being does not stop at individuals, as its mission has long included environmental protection. “Look to the Oceans: Uncovering the Mechanisms of a Warming World” explores why the oceans are central to understanding climate change, following scientists who track ocean heat and show how rising temperatures at sea are already linked to more floods, fires, and higher costs for communities.

Those consequences come into sharp focus in “Racing to Aid After Ragasa’s Fury.” When catastrophic flooding struck Guangfu Township in Taiwan, thousands of volunteers filled trains to Hualien, while others lit stoves in mobile kitchens and Jing Si Halls before dawn to prepare hot meals. Together they cleared streets and homes so people could begin to recover, revealing perseverance in long days of labor and the quiet goal of restoring safety and dignity.

Finally, “Inspired to Join the Tzu Chi Family: Our Broadening Volunteer Base” turns inward to the people who choose this path. Through the journeys of two Americans who have found a home on the Tzu Chi path, we see how different experiences can converge in a calling to serve. Their stories highlight another kind of effort: the inner work required to keep one’s heart open in the face of ongoing suffering, and the importance of training, spiritual care, and community in sustaining that vow.

Taken together, these five features do not offer a neat definition of what Tzu Chi does. Instead, they sketch a mosaic of steady efforts in health centers, schools, research, disaster zones, and within each volunteer to relieve suffering wherever it appears. The thread is the same: a promise made, then honored step by step over time. May these stories inspire your own steps on the path of compassionate action.
